Senior scientist with the South African Sugarcane Research Institute, where he was the technical manager of the Fertiliser Advisory Service and carried out research relating to the optimization of soil health and the nutrient requirements of sugarcane. Under his guidance, the Fertiliser Advisory Service was completely overhauled, with updated laboratory methodologies and improved recommendations packages being introduced.
